Subject: EternaBond installations on granulated roofs.
When EternaBond is installed to a granulated surface, there is a potential problem. If the granule is thicker than the EternaBond, no matter how
hard you roll it, it will not be thick enough to reach the sub-surface of the roofing membrane. This makes it possible for rainwater to migrate
under the EternaBond and create a leak. Furthermore, it is possible that as the roof heats up, the trapped water could turn to steam and cause
the bond to release.
THE SOLUTION:
First and foremost, the installer must inspect the roof carefully to determine two things:
- What is the condition of the granule? If it is easily rubbed off, do not apply the EternaBond directly to it. EternaBond is only as good
as the surface it is attached to.
- Always apply a light coating of EternaPrime to the granule; heavy enough to make sure it reaches through the granule to the roof surface,
but not so heavy that it pools. Pooled EternaPrime could dissolve the adhesion of the granule.
Eliminate the possibility of pooling by repeating strokes of the application brush in varying directions to ensure the primer has been
spread out. Make sure the primer is completely dry before applying the EternaBond tape.
- If the EternaBond tape you want to apply is not thick enough you have 2 choices.
- Use DoubleStick between the granulated roof surface and the finishing piece of EternaBond - effectively increasing the thickness of
the repair,
OR
- After application of the EternaBond tape, pour or brush a roof coating of your choice over the edges of the
Eternabond. This will ensure that the path for water migration is sealed, -OR-
- The best solution: Scrape away the granules and apply the EternaPrime and then the EternaBond to the naked or
exposed roof sub-surface.
